Teen, 17, charged in Hannah Leflar death pleads guilty

A 17-year-old boy accused in the first-degree murder of Hannah Leflar has pleaded guilty Friday afternoon at Regina's Court of Queen's Bench.

Leflar's family and friends filled the courtroom but there were no cheers when the plea was entered.
"Every time they come to court, they have to relive what happened. They see the individuals in court and you can tell it is difficult on them," said Crown prosecutor Chris White.
"I think they took something today from this proceeding that they hadn't taken in any other proceeding because the individual, in entering the guilty plea in law, is a murderer," White said.
Leflar's body was discovered on Jan. 12, 2015 in Regina. She was a Grade 11 student at Thom Collegiate at the time of her death.

Crown seeking adult sentence
"In our view, given the seriousness of the offence, we don't believe anything short of a life sentence is an appropriate disposition for this particular young person," said White.
The defence has opposed the application. It will be discussed at the teen's next court appearance in October.
An adult sentence carries a maximum life sentence. A youth sentence has a maximum of 10 years split between closed and open custody.
Co-accused to stand trial
The teen is one of two boys charged in Leflar's death. The other 17-year-old has decided to stand trial, beginning on November 14 in Regina.
The boys were 16 when her body was found and can't be named because of a publication ban.
