Parks Canada officials say it will be another week before the Covehead Bridge in the P.E.I. National Park is reopened to traffic.
Work began in October on the $5.8 million rehabilitation project of the Covehead Bridge.
The asset manger for Parks Canada on P.E.I., Bill Courtney, said it was scheduled to reopen on Friday, April 15.
"However the contractor asked for a little bit more uninterrupted time to keep his productivity up in advance of the summer season," he said. "So we consulted with some users at the wharf, the Covehead Harbour Authority and some fishermen to see if this would be acceptable, and we all agreed on a one week delay."
Courtney said the bridge will open to one lane of traffic on April 22. Both lanes will be open by the middle of July as well as a pedestrian sidewalk.
He noted there will still be some work taking place over the summer, but most of the beach area under the bridge will still be open to the public.
The project is expected to be complete by October 1.
