Children plucked from floe in the Hillsborough River
Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald says two children were rescued from an ice floe in the Hillsborough River near Acadian Drive Sunday afternoon.
The call came in at 3:20 p.m. that four people were in difficulty on the river but MacDonald says when firefighters arrived on scene, two had already made it to shore. Two were still on the ice floe.
He says 25 firefighters were involved and they used what the fire department call a banana boat to rescue the children.
Two photos tweeted by the fire department show the rescue boat heading for the children on the ice floe and then returning to shore with two extra people in the boat.
Charlottetown Police Services and Island EMS also responded to the call.
The children, according to police, were rescued safely.
Charlottetown police tweeted a reminder to warn everyone that changing temperatures are making ice conditions unsafe.
