Easter long weekend in Calgary: special events and closures

Free on-street parking, free swimming, regular garbage pickup and Easter eggs galore

As we head into the long Easter weekend, here is a list of what you need to know to get around town and take in the best the city has to offer.

Getting around

The City of Calgary is adjusting its public transit operations this weekend, with a Sunday level of service on Good Friday, and regular weekend service both Saturday and Sunday. Check the schedules page(external link) to find out when your bus is running.

On-street parking is free on Friday and Sunday and holiday rates are in effect at select Calgary Parking Authority(external link) surface lots and parkades.

Things to do

There are loads of family-friendly, fun festivities happening this weekend.
Show off your chicken dance moves during the Spring Sparktacular(external link), cuddle with some furry bunnies and fill your baskets at Butterfield Acres(external link), or hop on down to the Easter Eggstravaganza(external link) at the Calgary Zoo for cookie decorating and other Easter-themed crafts.

Free swimming will be available from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (half hour break will be waived if capacity permits) on Sunday at the following locations:
All other aquatics and fitness centres will be closed on Sunday.
Southland Leisure Centre(external link) will be open on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. but closed Sunday. The Village Square Leisure(external link) Centre will be closed on Friday, but open Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All city-operated arenas will be closed both Friday and Sunday, except for one. The Village Square Leisure Centre Arena will be open on from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days, with public skating from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on both days.

The front nine holes and driving ranges will open at McCall Lake(external link) and Shaganappi Point(external link) golf courses on Saturday.

Spring Cleaning

Regular garbage and recycling pickup will occur on Good Friday, so put out your blue and black carts as usual.
All three City of Calgary-operated landfills(external link) are open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Good Friday but will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Other closures

All City of Calgary administrative buildings including City Hall will be closed for the long weekend.
North Mount Pleasant(external link) and Wildflower Arts Centres(external link) will be closed Friday through Monday.
The Calgary Soccer Centre(external link) will be closed be closed on Friday, March 25, and Sunday, March 27.
The Nature Centre(external link) at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary will be closed on Friday, Sunday and Monday.
The Animal Services Centre(external link) will be closed on Friday and Sunday.
