"I could not be more excited to stand as the Alberta New Democrat candidate in this byelection," said Rai.
"I have been deeply inspired by Rachel Notley's leadership and know firsthand how much Rachel's positive and forward-looking vision will do for the people of Calgary-Greenway."
The Green Party of Alberta announced their candidate for the riding Feb. 11.
Thana Boonlert, an environmental engineer, is a member of the Calgary Climate Action Network and volunteers with the Calgary Drop-In Centre. He is focused on issues around homelessness and sustainability among others.
The remaining parties have not yet confirmed their candidates to replace Manmeet Bhullar, who died in November while trying to help a motorist on a snow-covered highway.
Meanwhile, Rai lives in Calgary with her husband and daughter.
Premier Rachel Notley welcomed the choice.
"She is a passionate and driven community leader and will be an exceptional representative for the residents of Calgary-Greenway," Notley said.
