The City of Brossard has voted in favour of a ban on plastic shopping bags in stores starting next fall.
The change comes into effect as of September 2016. The South Shore community will also undertake a transition period to phase out the plastic bags while also launching an awareness campaign.
The vote passed unanimously, with city councillors saying it was an ecological move.
The Canadian Plastic Bags Association had voiced its opposition, claiming Brossard hadn't properly consulted its citizens or merchants.
