Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this weekend

It's that time again — time to put the worries and troubles of your week aside and start planning your weekend. Here are five upcoming highlights from the Homestretch's Tracy Fuller.

1. Fluffy baby penguins

Need we say more? The Calgary Zoo's youngest penguin, Nero, is growing fast but still hasn't lost his downy brown baby feathers (not to be mistaken for fur!).
But act quick, because he won't be this fluffy forever. The five-month-old king penguin could start losing his baby feathers as early as this spring and they'll likely all be gone by the time he's three.

2. Calamity Town(external link)

Based on a series of classic American mystery novels starring the fictional character Ellery Queen — a writer and amateur detective who helped his father, a New York City police inspector, solve mysteries.
The dynamic and theatrical show has big scale and scope. It gets its world premiere at Vertigo Theatre in Calgary.

Calgary Opera presents the tale of one man's dark obsession with the woman he loved and lost.
The opera's composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold went on to produce the scores of many Hollywood movies and won the Oscar for his work on The Adventures of Robin Hood(external link).
British maestro Bramwell Tovey is back with the Calgary Opera Company for this production.

The urban planning film festival is curated by Rollin Stanley, the general manager of Calgary's Urban Strategy. There are two films screening on Feb. 3 — Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story(external link) and Kochuu a documentary about modern Japanese architecture and its impact on the Nordic building-tradition.

5. Big Winter Classic(external link)

Craft brewers will be pairing beers with bands this weekend. The event will showcase 55 bands and 17 craft beers at outdoor and indoor stages.
