The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man from the Detroit River Wednesday morning, just moments after the man stopped moving while in the water.
Witnesses say they saw the man walking on the ice near the Cobo Center, where the North American International Auto Show is hosted, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.
A call to 911 came in just minutes after 10 a.m. when the man first plunged into the water, explained Benjamin Chamberlain, public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard.
"That person was seen by security walking outwards on the ice until he fell through and then he was seen floating down the river," he told CBC News.
A Coast Guard cutter ship, which was patrolling the area at the time, was dispatched to rescue the man. Crews then deployed a smaller vessel to pull the man from the water.
The extent of the man's injuries are not known.
