The family of a man who has died following a stabbing last month in The Maples is desperate for police to track down the person who killed him.

Hector Sinclair was one of two men stabbed in the upper body at a home in the 1100 block of Beauty Avenue around 9 p.m. on Dec. 22.

"It breaks me down to even drive by my dad's place and go there because I know that he's not going to come back," said Lacey Sumner, Sinclair's daughter. "It's hard to believe. I'm still in shock that this all happened this fast."

Sumner said their family moved to Winnipeg two years ago from Lake St. Martin after it flooded.

"If we were out in our own reserve, I don't think none of this would've happened out there," she said.

Jackie Sinclair, Hector's wife, agrees.

"If we weren't flooded out, if we were still living there, things would be different — a lot different," she said. "It's dangerous in the city. That's how I feel."

Sumner said her father was a fisherman in the community before they moved and he returned to the community to fish regularly.

He provided for both Sumner and her daughter, who now really misses him, she said.

Sinclair was listed in critical condition in hospital after the attack and was taken off life support on Dec. 31, according to relatives. His brother is Adrian Sinclair, the chief of Lake St. Martin First Nation.

"I've only heard the one story where someone kicked in the back door, and his friend was coming up from downstairs and found him on the floor," she said. "It hurts that this person hasn't been found … I wouldn't want another family to go through another tragedy like this."

The other man who was stabbed in the incident was released from hospital the night of the stabbing.

Sinclair's family is asking anyone with information to get in touch with police.
