Damage to building estimated at $100,000; cause of fire under investigation
There was an unwelcome wake-up call for the residents of an apartment building in Old Strathcona early Thursday morning.
Dozens of people were temporarily evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out inside Fort Garry House, a highrise at 87th Avenue and 104th Street.
Fire crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before 1 a.m.
Investigators say the blaze started inside a second-floor suite and caused extensive damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Although fire officials say the blaze was extinguished quickly, damage to the building is estimated at $100,000.
One woman had to be taken to hospital with injuries.
