Garbage trucks can't turn around where Weeks Drive ends abruptly
Summerside is exploring a long-term solution for a dead-end street which is too narrow for garbage trucks to turn around, causing delays to garbage pickup this week.
A resident of Weeks Drive had been allowing trucks from IWMC, P.E.I.'s waste management company, to turn around on their property, but withdrew permission when they found the heavy truck was causing damage.
IWMC officials said they were happy to provide service, curbside as long as the truck could safely get turned around and back out again.
Pickup is planned to resume Thursday, with another resident volunteering their driveway.
One resident complained it was a bad time for an interruption in service because of Christmas garbage piling up.
"Every pick-up is a full cart. This time of year it's just unbelievable." said Tony Gallant.
Summerside Mayor Bill Martin said the city is seeking a permanent solution, such as adding a cul-de-sac to the end of the street or possibly connecting it to Lily Crescent at both ends.
"We're looking at two or three long-term solutions. There are right of ways at the top of the street that may allow us or should allow us to connect with another street, which would connect Lily and the other street," said Martin.
"It's an expensive fix, but it may be our only option."
But those options won't be looked at until the Spring. In the meantime, residents will have their garbage picked up.
