A Winnipeg woman was so moved by the red ribbon campaign for missing and murdered indigenous women, that she wanted to adorn a bridge in her part of town.

Susan Abbott and her two adult daughters and adult son went out Monday afternoon to put about 40 red ribbons on a bridge on Fermor Avenue between Archibald Street and St. Anne's Road.

"I thought it was really important especially out in the suburbs," Abbott said. "The suburbs are removed from downtown and we kind of feel removed, whereas it could be any one of us. I think a lot of people struggle and pretend. I'm all about breaking that open."

So far, six other bridges have red ribbons. The Midtown Bridge on Donald Street will be done Monday evening.

Abbott said she has been talking with Red Cloth Ribbon campaign organizer Althea Guiboche over social media. Abbott went to Mitchell Fabrics on Main Street and bought 10 yards of red cloth and has some left over. She plans to do another bridge.

"I saw the Red Cloth Ribbon campaign and I just thought that I wanted absolutely to be involved, because I was on and off the street for years. So, by the grace of God, it could have been me," Abbott said, adding she has had her own struggles with mental health.

She said she used to hitchhike all over Canada in the 80s and feels lucky to be alive after a few close calls.

"It could be any woman. I think a lot of people living paycheque to paycheque. It doesn't take much to become homeless. I battled addiction and mental health issues so, we have to come together. I think there's so much separation. I think it should be all women rising together.

"I just think a lot of interesting things are happening in this city and things are hopefully changing in bringing these kinds of things to light. I think we have to keep it in the public eye until every family has peace with it."
