Shoal Lake 40 is a beautiful place with a painful history.

A century ago, the community was forced to move from its ancestral village site so Winnipeg could build an aqueduct. Today, the people of Shoal Lake 40 live on a man-made island that straddles the Manitoba-Ontario border.

And they've been under one of the longest boil-water advisories in Canada – nearly two decades.

But there's hope. The federal government just announced funding for 'Freedom Road', which will finally connect Shoal Lake 40 to the outside world.
