After a fire broke out in the middle of the night, 30 inmates have been moved out of the Don Jail.
A guard was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation but has since been released.
Corrections officials are investigating whether the fire was set deliberately.
In the second day of a strike by provincial public servants, there are concerns about the tense situation at the Don Jail.
Guards have been deemed essential but fewer numbers are on the job.
Union president, Leah Cassleman, says at one jail, no guards are working at all.
A spokesperson for the Corrections Ministry says there have been withdrawls of essential workers at 17 jails throughout the province.
