A rowdy evening anti-austerity protest downtown ended with the arrest of at least one person after Montreal police declared the march illegal and used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The protest started at Parc Émilie-Gamelin at around 8:30 p.m. and was declared illegal 20 minutes later after rocks, firecrackers and other projectiles were launched in the direction of police.
Montreal police said the windows of police vehicles were broken by demonstrators and one officer suffered a minor leg injury.
Windows at the SNC-Lavalin building and a BMO bank were also smashed.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested for obstructing police and released on a promise to appear in court.
