A new study suggesting tolls are the solution to Montreal's traffic woes has sparked a heated debate about how to reduce congestion on the island.
Canada's Ecofiscal Commission, a think-tank with headquarters at McGill University, has recommended putting tolls on all bridges leading to Montreal as a way of reducing gridlock.
The study suggests tolls would encourage more people to use public transit.
On Facebook(external link), several people came out in favour of the idea, with James Dufault saying: "The money would fund transit infrastructure and service frequency, and fewer cars would make more space for buses. The supremacy of private automobile over commercial vehicles, transit, biking, and walking has to come to an end — there is no more space."
Brian Lowry, another commenter, had a different idea.
"There's an easy way to make tolls progressive: don't toll cars with two or more people in them. Toll everything else," he wrote.
On Twitter, meanwhile, reaction was strong and swift.

Some came out in favour of the idea.
