Your picks for Alberta's best hidden hotspots
Everyone has their favourite off-the-beaten-track getaway. Whether you prefer a backcountry road trip, a night of lakefront camping or a secluded hike, Alberta has a lot to offer for local travellers and weekend warriors.
On Thursday, Edmonton AM radio host Mark Connolly asked for your favourite 'hidden gem' tourist destinations around the province.
Here are some of your top picks:
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, located about 100 kilometres southeast of Lethbridge, this site was a must-see for a few of our listeners. The Milk River valley historic site contains the largest concentration of aboriginal rock carvings on the Great Plains of North America.
The Beaver Boardwalk in Hinton. This scenic trail, which connects to the Hinton Bike Park, has lots of wildlife (including beavers, of course). One listener describes it as "a little slice of heaven" and suggests you end the day with a latté at the Old Grind.
The Icefields Parkway continues to impress. You can expect some breathtaking views on this stretch of road from Jasper to Lake Louise.
Other highlights:
Horseback Adventures, located just outside Hinton in the hamlet of Brule. "If you are looking for a way to experience nature and the unspoiled beauty of nature in the Rockies, this is one trip worth checking out," says one listener.
Trekcetera Museum in Vulcan. Not only does this museum have a serious collection of Star Trek memorabilia, but it also has artifacts from a slew of other famous movies. A must-see for movie buffs and Trekkies alike.
Make a trip to the Lougheed Hotel, where you can get a taste of authentic German schnitzel. According to one listener, the hotel is "a great place with great people," and the beer always tastes better there.
'The Nest' in Slave Lake Provincial Park is an accessible house located right in the middle of the campground. They even have wheelchair that can travel on the sand, so everyone can enjoy the beach.
Thanks to everyone who shared their hidden gems with the morning show. If we missed your favourite travel destination, let us in on the secret in the comments section below.
