Calgary police on scene near Foothills industrial park investigating what led to crash
The driver of a semi-truck that collided with a train in southeast Calgary on Monday afternoon has been taken to hospital with serious injuries to his legs.
The man had to be extricated by firefighters after the crash at 54th Avenue and 30th Street S.E. around 1:45 p.m. MT.
Firefighters used specialized extraction tools like airbags and cutters to free his legs, which had become trapped.
"Time is always of the essence especially when you have severe injuries," said Carole Henke with the Calgary Fire Department.
The injured driver was conscious and breathing throughout the process, Henke said.
There was no concern about hazardous materials, as the train was carrying lumber, according to the fire department.
