A carjacking and home invasion near Ponoka, Alta., ended in the arrest Friday of a man wanted for murder in Calgary.
RCMP were called about a possible carjacking on Highway 2 south of the Ponoka exit at about 3:40 a.m. after passersby reported that a group of people in a black SUV looked to be forcing three people from a parked car.
As police approached the scene, five of the people in the SUV ran off, but police were able to track down and arrest a 19-year-old woman nearby.
Two hours later another call came in.
A homeowner near the scene reported four people had just broken into a house and after threatening the residents with a pipe, and made off with a Jeep Cherokee and some money.
Police were able to arrest a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man remaining at the scene.
By then, RCMP in Maskwacis had located the speeding Jeep, successfully using a spike belt to stop the Jeep as it entered the Ermineskin Cree Nation reserve.
Another 17-year-old girl was arrested but a male suspect fled on foot.
A door to door ground search using police dogs and a helicopter proved fruitless.
However the suspect was later arrested with help from local residents, police said.
That 18-year-old suspect turned out to be wanted in Calgary in the death two weeks ago of Christa Cachene, 26.
The three victims of the attempted carjacking were taken to hospital with minor injuries and released.
The two residents home at the time of the home invasion were not hurt.
