Mayor Lorne MacDonald says it's a question of money
For the second time in six years, the town council in Mulgrave will vote Monday on whether to dissolve and join the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.
The town's public input committee met Wednesday night, heard from residents and recommended dissolving the town and joining the surrounding municipality.
"It's a big decision council has to make; to do the right thing for the public and the residents of the town," Mayor Lorne MacDonald told CBC News.
He said council has been waiting to hear what residents want and he thinks they got the message loud and clear last night.
'Caught between a rock and a hard place'
MacDonald said while some were worried about losing services such as garbage pickup, snow removal and water and sewer repairs, the majority of people felt it best to amalgamate because they can't afford to pay more taxes.
"Council has been told many times don't increase taxes and this is where we're caught between a rock and a hard place," the mayor said.
"If we want stuff done we've got to increase taxes and it's a burden on the residents which is not acceptable."
The mayor believes council will vote in favour of dissolution, something the council of 2009 rejected.
If that happens, council will make the request to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, which will make the final determination.
