Ministry now delivering food baskets to people's homes
The Harvest House Ministries soup kitchen in Glace Bay, N.S., has closed because of a ceiling collapse, but the organization's work hasn't stopped.
Early last month, the dining room and kitchen's aging ceiling fell through in several places.
Coordinator Melvin Sangster says instead of shutting down completely, volunteers and staff are now delivering food baskets to the homes of people in need.
"A lot of them don't have cars, no way of getting different places. They are all on a fixed income, a low income, and they need help in every way possible," said Sangster.
"We are staying because our heart is here with the people and we believe that God sent us here to help the people and that's what we're going to do."
The food baskets feature canned goods and non-perishable food.
Sangster says they are looking for a new facility and hope to find a location with a kitchen by Christmas.
Harvest House has served hot meals to about 60 people a day for the past 15 years.
