The Region of Waterloo is donating $25,000 to aid Syrian refugees through the Mennonite Central Committee's support program.
Councillors approved the donation at a meeting Wednesday, following a similar move by the City of Kitchener last week where councillors decided to donate $10,000 to the Syrian cause.
Regional council also pledged to encourage the federal government to facilitate relief efforts and to encourage the community at large to contribute to the refugee cause.
The Government of Canada has said it will match donations made by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities up until December 31st, to a maximum of $100 million.
