Canada's Mohammed Ahmed ended his season in a memorable way Friday at the Diamond League meet in Brussels, breaking a 17-year-old national record in the 5,000-metres. with a time of 13:10.00.
Ahmed, a native of St. Catharines, Ont., set the mark en route to a 12th-place finish in the final Diamond league meet of the 2015 season.
Ahmed has had a strong year, winning gold in the 10,000m at the Toronto Pan Ams, while also qualifying for the final in the 5,000m at the recent world track and field championships.
Jeff Schiebler previously held the Canadian record in the 5,000m of 13:13.96, a mark that stood since 1998.
