Among those ticketed were teachers, a school bus driver and a drunk driver with a child in the car
Calgary police say they have handed out about 1,400 traffic tickets during the first week of school, with parents, teachers and even one school bus driver being ticketed this week.
One driver was caught going more than double the 30 km/h speed limit, said Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey.
"The top speed that we had this week of somebody going through a school zone was 70 km/h in a 30km/h zone," said Stacey.
"The excuse we were given by the fellow who was going through at that speed was that he was late for a golf tee time," he added.
Drunk driver had child in car
Another man was allegedly driving drunk with a child in the car. He was stopped for speeding at 11:30 a.m. on the first day of school.
"We seized his vehicle. That's gone. He has been charged, and he actually didn't even have a driver's licence," Stacey told CBC News.
The number of tickets isn't higher than normal, even with school zones being switched to playground zones this year, Stacey says.
He's says he hopes the number of violations will go down as people adjust to the school year.
