Councillor Matthew Green of Ward 3 will hold a town hall meeting on police carding on Sept. 15.
He wants to hear from "anybody who's had lived experience" on being stopped by police on the street.
The province is currently holding consultations in various cities on the controversial policing practice of carding or street checks. But it didn't include Hamilton in the cities it planned to visit.
So, Green set out to host a public event in Hamilton and has now confirmed the date. Green was "extremely disappointed" that Hamilton wasn't on the list of five cities where the province has scheduled formal consultation.
Instead, Green says he'll consult with residents at the town hall. He hopes the Ontario government either sends a representative or accepts the information he gathers at the meeting.
He wants anyone with experience with street checks to attend, particularly people who are willing to "go on the record so we can give the Hamilton perspective to the provincial process."
The meeting will be at city hall council chambers at 6:30 p.m.
