Club hopes council will reconsider initial application for the property
The board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottetown has rejected the options presented to them by Montague town council.
The club purchased a house on Wood Islands Road, but earlier this month Montague council voted against allowing the house to be used for anything but a residence.
Following public outcry, council met with the club on Aug. 18 and presented two options.
One of the options included moving the house to an alternate location in Montague.
The board issued a news release late Tuesday, saying relocation would incur significant costs to the taxpayers of Montague, and further delays.
"The options presented by town council did not align with our values or our current financial board position. However, we believe that we have presented the town with a solution that respects the bylaw process, allows us to make an immediate impact on youth in Montague, and does not involve the expenditure of public funds. It is a win-win for the club and the town," the release said.
The board says it hopes Montague town council will reconsider their initial application for the current location.
The Boys and Girls Club planned to start the after-school programming on Sept. 8 for children ages five to 12.
Parents who hoped to use the service have now been notified by the club that it won't be up and running by that date.
