Swimmers in St. Vital are going to have to wait a little longer to get their feet wet in one of the neighbourhood's public pools.
The City of Winnipeg announced it would be giving the St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool a $3-million makeover in November of 2013.
The upgrades were supposed to be done by the fall of 2014, but a series of unforeseen issues with the pool caused the city to push back the completion date. Now, the city is saying the outdoor pool may not open until at least Labour Day.
St Vital Coun. Brian Mayes said the project was on track until workers discovered the bottom of the pool was in need of repairs to keep divers safe.
"We've had to change the angle at the bottom of the pool. The provincial requirements changed over time," said Mayes. "I'm not sure if that's changed from the original design in the 60s or changed more recently. In any event we have to go back and do some re-engineering."
Mayes said the city is working hard to get the pool fixed and available to the public as soon as possible.
"Believe me, I would love to get the thing open and I've been doing everything I can to get it open for the end-bit of this summer," said Mayes.
