LaSalle Fire Chief Dave Sutton called on council to fund a second fire hall in the west end, at a cost of about $1 million to $1.2 million in today's dollars, he said in an interview with CBC News.
LaSalle's town council approved the 2015 Fire Master Plan Interim Review, in principle, Tuesday night, said the local fire chief. The implementation of the recommendation will "be subject to council approval budget allocation at the time of proposed implementation."
The original master plan was first filed in 2008.
"Over the years, we're come to realize that the second fire station is required in the western end of the municipality," said Sutton on Wednesday morning. "It helps us keep pace with the urbanization that's taken place in the municipality."
In the short term, the new west-end fire station would allow volunteer, on-call firefighters to respond faster to calls, said the chief. And, in the long term, it would provide infrastructure as the population grows, he added.
The LaSalle Fire Service moved into their current fire hall in 2013, located at 1900 Normandy St. The service currently has nine full-time staff and 28 volunteer staff, Sutton said.
