The award, decided by popular vote, recognizes a paddling trip that's both tough, and historically significant.
Ranta said he was humbled to be nominated alongside other world-renowned paddlers.
"For me to get nominated and to get such a prestigious award was just the cherry on the cake of a beautiful journey, that's for sure," he said.
"I was in total shock. They said it was a landslide victory. I'm just beside myself, and so is Spitz."
He said he and his dog Spitzi, who accompanied him on the journey, would be celebrating with a steak dinner.
Canoe and Kayak magazine called Ranta's seven-month journey the longest solo canoe expedition in a single season to-date.
Ranta said he hopes the recognition will help him to secure sponsors for future trips.
