RCMP officer from outside Airdrie detachment to file independent report to senior management
Airdrie RCMP say a formal public complaint has been launched into the case of an alleged assault on a Calgary cab driver.
It comes after the RCMP reopened an investigation it closed nearly two years ago into Sardar Qayum's case, who appears to be the target of a racist assault by a passenger in a video obtained by Global News.
A senior RCMP officer from outside the Airdrie detachment has now been tasked to investigate the file and provide a report on the findings to RCMP senior management.
"Based on my meeting with Mr. Qayum, we have initiated the formal public complaint process, which is the best way for him to get the answers he is looking for," said Supt. Tony Hamori, assistant southern Alberta district commander, in a release.
"He has also been advised that the RCMP criminal investigation into the alleged assault will be sent to Crown counsel for their review to determine if criminal charges are warranted."
The man caught on the dashboard-mounted camera has since been fired from his position at Alcro Electric.
