Farida Abdurahman, 33, was struck by a car as she crossed Centre Street North near 43rd Avenue in Highland Park at about 11:15 p.m. on Monday.
She died in hospital.
Police found a damaged silver Buick Regal a few hours later on Fourth Street northeast and later announced they were questioning a person of interest.
"After identifying and locating the vehicle used in the collision, further enquiries led to the identification of the man believed to be the driver at the time of the incident," said police in a release.

B.C. convictions

Court records reveal Varley has been convicted previously of driving-related offences in Richmond, B.C.
In 2004 he was convicted of driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention. The original charge was impaired driving.
And in 2011 he was convicted of driving without reasonable consideration. The original charge in that incident was also impaired driving.
