'He was not a confrontational type of person,' manager of Big Sand Lake Lodge says
The manager of a northern Manitoba fishing and hunting lodge in South Indian Lake, Man., says the death of one of its guides has rattled the surrounding First Nation community.
RCMP have confirmed they are investigating "the suspicious death" of a 28-year-old man from South Indian Lake. the man died Thursday morning, RCMP said.
Linda McKerchar, the manager of Big Sand Lake Lodge on O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, told CBC News the man had worked at the lodge for around 10 years.
"He was a really, really nice person. From what I saw at the lodge, which is a short season of course, he was not a confrontational type of person," said McKerchar.
"We only hire out of the community and you tend to get the same people back, year after year, so it's actually like a small family. So it's really, really difficult when you lose someone from that kind of a group."
RCMP have not confirmed any details about the death. CBC News is not identifying the man because it is unclear if next-of-kin have been notified.
The chief of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation was unavailable to comment. Big Sand Lake Lodge is owned by the First Nation.
South Indian Lake is about 775 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
