A mask, crafted in just the right way, can appear to transform expressions and emotions of a character with only the subtle differences in a performer's body language. Even though the mask never changes, our imaginations make us think that something's different. This simple effect is the underlying basis and beauty in The Wonderheads' returning Fringe hit, Loon.
It's a love story of sorts, centreing on the lonely, yet sweet, Francis (played by the talented Kate Braidwood). In a perfectly timed performance (in terms of musical pacing and light cues that become magic with this team), Francis' love of the moon pulls in the audience, who constantly shift from caring to laughing, to caring again.
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most clever, the most wondrous. In Loon, the simplicity in the use of lights, props and Braidwood's on-point performance unlocks our imaginations, giving us adults a little bit of much-needed magic.
