Blogger releases local bike map in tandem with opening of entire inner-city cycle network
The man behind Mike's Bloggity Blog has created a map and guide to Calgary's new inner-city cycle track.
"When I travel to New York, Amsterdam, Chicago — one of the ways my partner and I always travel is by bike, because it's a great way of seeing the city. And now Calgary has that," said Mike Morrison.
Calgary By Bike was released Thursday morning in tandem with the opening of the final two lanes of the network, along Eighth and Ninth avenues.
- Calgary's entire cycle track to open ahead of schedule
- 'Bicycle ambassadors' to help Calgarians navigate expanded cycle track
- Calgary bike report finds majority wear helmets, 79% are men
The guide is broken down into seven inner-city neighbourhoods — including Chinatown, Mission and Inglewood — and features 60 things to see and do along Calgary's new bike network.
I'm a casual biker. I don't own one piece of spandex. - Mike Morrison
"A lot of people haven't considered the idea of bike tourism or just enjoying the city on your bike now. It's not necessarily about going to and from work."
Morrison's map zeroes in on notable patios, coffee shops and photo ops to help visitors and city-dwellers plan their day in Calgary.
And because the inner-city cycle track network is so flat, Morrison says anyone can enjoy it.
"I'm a casual biker. I don't own one piece of spandex."
You can order the new guide and map online for $5. It will also be for sale at the cycle-track network launch party on June 21 at Barb Scott Park.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature music, food trucks and games such as croquet, bocce and ping pong.
