Hamilton's local politicians will decide Wednesday whether they should formally oppose the sale of Hydro One on behalf of their residents.
City council will vote to ask the province to stop the sale of Hydro One. It will likely also call on the province to upgrade aging Hydro One infrastructure.
The move comes after the provincial budget in May, when the Liberals paved the way for the sale of Hydro One. The Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats wanted the item separated from the omnibus budget bill, warning electricity rates will soar higher if the utility is privatized.
The motion from Coun. Sam Merulla is just one item on the agenda for Wednesday's city council meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m.
Here's what else they'll discuss:
  • A compassionate grant program for residents who had frozen water pipes this year.
  • The terms of reference for a new joint liaison committee between the city and the Hamilton Port Authority. The two sides have clashed in recent years. The committee should clear up any "grey, black, shady, unclear areas" between the two, said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.
