Saint John city council has given Saint John Non-Profit Housing an option to take possession of the Jelly Bean houses on Wellington Row and two other surplus Peel Plaza properties on Union Street.
The city-owned buildings have been vacant for years and are in disrepair.
Deputy Mayor Shelley Rinehart says the group must consider whether the buildings — or even the facades — can be saved at a cost that the group can handle.
"They just need some time to come up with some architectural drawings and see if it is, in fact, feasible for them to move forward with those buildings," said Rinehart.
The option expires in one year.
