Processional performance to happen during the Cathedral Village Arts Festival on Saturday
A group of artists, musicians, and dancers in Regina are working together to pay tribute to Michele Sereda in a "moveable feast."
The processional performance will be featured on Saturday during the Cathedral Village Arts Festival.
Sereda was the artistic director of Curtain Razors Theatre in Regina. She was one of four artists that died in a car accident near Regina in February.
Sereda's vision was to introduce her Belgian friends from De Propere Fanfare to a diverse group of Regina dancers, musicians, performers, visual artists and clowns.
Over the past couple of weeks, these unlikely groups have met up and created "outrageous pieces of processional performance."
The Cathedral Village Arts Festival kicked off with an impromptu performance by some of the musicians, directed by visiting Belgian artist Koen de Ruyck.
Joey Tremblay is the new artistic director for Curtain Razors Theatre. He said the performance in the park was a celebration of Sereda's work and a continuation of her collaborative spirit.
"Michele was a conduit. She loved to create relationships between people," Tremblay said. "Michele was really fearless in her collaborations where she wasn't worried about failing ever. She always said, 'Just do it and we'll see what happens.' "
Tremblay said the musical feast embodies that fearless spirit.
"We used Michele's courage to just do it, and then what happens is magic," Tremblay said, laughing.
The Moveable Feast features dancing chickens, the Pile of Bones Brass Band, bell ringers, Ugandan drummers, and many more unlikely pairings.
"She loved a mess," Tremblay said. "She loved to get in there and be messy with the work she did, so it's a great homage."
Tremblay said he thinks this performance would have made his late friend happy.
"I think as a community of performers in Regina, we are through mourning the sadness of losing Michele. This is what she'd want us to do — make a lot of noise and celebrate. Don't cry anymore and continue the work."
The Moveable Feast will be performed down 13th Avenue in Regina on Saturday at 11 a.m. CST.
