Pavement on 100-series highway between exits 3 and 4 shows heavy deterioration
The condition of Highway 125 in Cape Breton is becoming a cause for concern, a local politician says.
The 100-series highway has developed extensive ruts between exits 3 and 4 near North Sydney.
That stretch of highway runs through District 3 of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Mae Rowe, the District 3 councillor, wonders what is causing the ruts.
"You know, you figure it is the heavy trucks that are doing that. But is it just the heavy trucks? Or is it the way the asphalt is mixed together?"
Jamie Chisholm, the Transportation Department's construction manager in the area, doesn't believe there is a problem with the mix.
"Based on what I saw, I don't think its an issue with the paving itself," he said.
Chisholm chalks it up to heavy traffic and regular wear and tear.
He says there are no immediate plans to work on the road, but that could change. "Certainly it is an issue that we're going to have to stay on top of."
The department plans to measure the depth of the ruts later this spring.
"If they do become too much of a hazard, we may have to go out and do some temporary patching until we can actually get in and repave the entire road."
