A returning favourite, swashbuckling adventure from Scotland, and a giant peach are all on tap for the upcoming season at Manitoba Theatre for Young People.
The family-oriented theatre unveiled its 2015-2016 season on Tuesday — the first season to be programmed by new artistic director Pablo Felices-Luna, who joined MTYP this past November.
The upcoming season, like the current one, features a line-up of seven plays — up from the abbreviated 2013-14 season, when it presented only five productions during a financial and artistic restructuring.
Here's what's coming up at MTYP:
Danny, King of the Basement (Oct. 1-18): David S. Craig's popular play, about a boy from an impoverished home who discovers the kids with more "stuff" have their own problems too, makes a return to MTYP in a new production.
Peg and the Yeti (Nov. 4-14): An adaptation of Kennth Oppel's illustrated book about a young girl who sets out to climb Mount Everest and ends up befriending a yeti. A co-production with St. Catharines' Carousel Players, the theatre where Felices-Luna was artistic director before he came to MTYP.
James and the Giant Peach (Dec. 3-27): MTYP's holiday show is a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's much-loved book.
The Power of Harriet T! (Jan. 27 - Feb. 7, 2016): Another show making a return to MTYP, this play explores the legacy of Harriet Tubman, who helped escaped slaves find freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad.
Snow Angel (Feb. 24 - March 5): A story about the power of kindness, told through movement, mask work, and music by Calgary's Quest Theatre.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (March 30 - April 10): Grown-ups got the eye-popping Heart of Robin Hood this season, and next year, it's the kids' turn. For spring break, Scottish company Visible Fictions (who brought their remarkably inventive Jason and the Argonauts to MTYP in the past) present their take on the bandit of Sherwood Forest.
In This World (April 20-30): Two girls in detention following a fight at school discover a deeper bond between them in this play by Hannah Moscovitch, one of Canada's most in-demand playwrights.
