Cape Bretoners are excited about the Sydney premiere of the new film Relative Happiness happening on Friday night.
The film is based on the book and screenplay written by Sydney native Lesley Crewe.
“It’s a pretty thrilling time,” said Crewe, adding she is excited to see people go into the theatre and meet readers of the book.
The movie is set in Cape Breton and it’s about a woman named Lexie who loves to bake, runs a bed and breakfast, and is waiting for Prince Charming to come along.
“This is where the story was born. I live here. Lexie is from here,” said Crewe.
Relative Happiness screened in Halifax last weekend. The movie was filmed in nearby Hubbards.
Crewe says it’s important for people to see films about the local identity.
“I think it's really important to make films about us and to be able to come to your own local theatre and see them is… pretty spectacular,” she said.
Fan Shantelle Farrell was looking forward to watching the film.
"I'm so excited to have it here in Cape Breton and just kind of shining some light on some great talent that we have here, so it's really, really awesome,” she said.
Linda MacDonald has read all of Crewe’s books and was giddy about meeting the author.
“Well, my heart’s still pounding,” she said with a laugh.
Relative Happiness plays this weekend, with several screenings happening each day.
Crewe's eighth novel is set to come out in the fall.
