A Calgary alderman says he's relieved a man who plotted to blow up his house will be behind bars for a year.
Dale Hodges and a community activist were targeted by Ken Szczerba, the former president of the Calgary chapter of the Hell's Angels. Szczerba was angry the two had blocked plans by the motorcycle gang to build a new clubhouse in Bowness.
He was sentenced to a year in jail and two years probation for the crime.
Hodges says he appreciates the message the court is sending to those who would try to intimidate elected officials. Hodges says the incident hasn't affected the way he carries out his duties, but it has affected his life outside of city hall.
"I'm just a little more aware of my surroundings when I'm out here in the city or anywhere else. I try to keep a little better eye on things, so you do pay a little more attention to your surroundings and what people are up to, particularly when someone appears (outside your house) at 8:30 in the morning with a camera."
Hodges says he hopes the publicity surrounding the case might have an impact on the activities of Hell's Angels in the city.
