Boxes and boxes of tampons, pads and other feminine hygiene products have filled up donation bins at Winnipeg Harvest as Manitobans donated products for women in need.

Food bank officials say they received at least 272 kilograms of the products as part of the Winnipeg Women Helping Women and Real Men Buy Tampons social media campaigns.

As well, it has collected more than $1,000 in cash donations, said Harvest spokesperson Chris Albi.

Women of all income levels have to deal with the monthly costs of hygiene products, but Albi said low-income women on a budget are most affected.

She said in the month of January, the food bank received nearly 7,000 requests for menstrual products but could only meet 125 of those requests.

Donations came in from across the province, as well as from a pharmacy in Stonewall, Man., and a Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto, she said.

It's not too late to help: Winnipeg Harvest is still accepting donations of feminine hygiene products.
