Was Ink the octopus trying to break free, or simply exploring the environment?

A video posted to LiveLeak shows a large octopus as it apparently tries to escape from its tank at the Seattle Aquarium. At the last minute, an aquarium staffer can be seen helping the animal stay in its tank
"He's making a break for it!" Shouts a man in the crowd as Ink throws its tentacles over the glass enclosure. Another person behind the camera says: "He's like ... aww man, they got me!"
However, the Seattle Aquarium's Tim Kuniholm told a local television station(external link) that the video had been blown out of proportion.
Kuniholm said the octopus was "exploring his boundaries."
"In the video that’s been shared by the public it’s one of our staff members helping Ink back into his exhibit after exploring the edge,” he said.
The Seattle Aquarium does regular work with the giant Pacific octopus species found in the local waters. Only a few weeks ago, the aquarium released two of its octopuses back into the sound.
The aquarium posted a YouTube video of the release of an octopus named Hazel:
