The race

The central area of the province has been one of the most loyal to the Liberals. Incumbent Valerie Docherty has won both of her elections in this district by a wide margin.
Green Party leader and popular local dentist, Peter Bevan-Baker, is hoping to unseat Docherty. The Progressive Conservative candidate, Randy Robar, served as the commanding officer for the RCMP on the Island from 2004-10. Jesse Cousins is representing the NDP.

District profile

On the South Shore, midway between Charlottetown and Summerside, this district feels the pull of both cities, with commuters travelling in both directions.
Not a tourism powerhouse, agriculture is the mainstay for the district, including a poultry processing plant in Crapaud. It does have the major tourist area of Victoria-by-the-Sea, several golf courses, and a national historic site at Fort Amherst.
One of the biggest controversies in the province in the last four years was centred in Kellys Cross-Cumberland, the realignment of the Trans-Canada Highway, known as Plan B. The site was scene of protests. Opponents said the realignment was unnecessary, and that the new highway cut through valuable old-growth forest. The government argued the realignment was required for safety reasons, but some believed the money was spent only because federal dollars were available.
