The president of the medical staff at Riverview Hospital has resigned. Dr. Jaime Paredes says he's alarmed at the increasing number of shock treatments that have been performed at the facility since 1997.

That's the same year the hospital for the mentally ill began receiving a fee for the therapy.

The doctor says his concerns about shock treatments have been met with indifference and defensiveness, and says he doesn't believe he could achieve anything more.

Paredes says a review of the controversial practice will be released on Wednesday.

While he has resigned his management position, he will continue to work at the Riverview.
