The problems just keep coming for Winnipeg's Elmwood Kildonans swimming pool.
The city-run facility was closed May 8, 2014, following an early-morning electrical fire that caused extensive damage. While those were being repaired, structural engineers noticed cracks along the pool tank walls during an inspection in November.
The pool tank is still structurally sound, but the cracks had to be dealt with before the building could reopen.
But while that was being done, even more problems were found.
On Thursday, the city said a portion of the plaster between the pool tiles and concrete tank walls has separated from the tank.
"This could not be detected until the ceramic tiles associated with the cracks were removed," a news release stated.
"While this issue can be fixed, it will take more time to complete repairs than was initially anticipated. The contractor has extended work shifts to expedite the pool reopening, however, a reopening date is not yet known."
Spring programming will not be offered at Elmwood Kildonans Pool. An enhanced schedule and additional programming will continue to be offered at Transcona Centennial Pool until the end of the spring session.
Further updates and information on the pool’s reopening will be provided when an expected reopening date is known, the city said.
The pool was also closed down for an extended time in late 2011 after strong winds tore away shingles and sections of insulation on the roof.
