Argentinian wines are crowd-pleasers that offer a good bang for your buck
On the Coast's wine expert Barbara Philip is on the move this week. She's in Argentina studying the country's wines including its classic varietal, malbec.
Philip says malbec appeals to wine experts as much as casual tasters because it's beautifully fruity, upfront, has low tannins and acidity, and is rarely bitter on the palate.
Also, like other Argentinian wines, it's good value.
Argentinian wine: 4 recommendations
Felino - Vina Colbos (Malbec, $19.99)
A classic Malbec: plum notes, soft acidity, and smooth tannins make this a perfect wine to have with a good piece of beef.
Amado Sur - Trivento (Malbec, Bonardaand Syrah blend, $16.99)
This spicy red blend is perfect for a rainy day. It's produced by one of the best improved wineries in the country.
High Mountain Vines - Catena (Cabernet Sauvignon, $22.99)
Cabernet Sauvignons also do well in Argentina. The varietal grows well in cooler, high-mountain vineyards. This one is particularly note-worthy, with a crisp acidity and notes of blackcurrent, violets and cassis.
Cuma - Michel Torino (Torontes, Torino $13.99)
This white wine is from a varietal created in north Argentina. It's aromatic and very crisp on the palate. It makes for a gorgeous aperitif.
