The City of Winnipeg says it is expecting another major city infrastructure project will cost taxpayers many millions more than initial cost projections — something the city says is due in large part to Manitoba’s PST hike.
A report to the city’s finance committee this week shows cost upgrades to the North End Water Pollution Control Centre are set to increase by at least $22 million. The increase brings the project price tag up to almost $570 million.
The announcement comes just weeks after learning upgrades to Winnipeg’s South End water pollution control centre are going to cost $63 million more than expected.
This week’s report says the one per cent increase in the provincial sales tax has influenced the rise in price.
The report also estimates the cost of power from Manitoba Hydro is also slated to go up.
The report said the final cost of the sewage plant could still vary significantly or even double.
