When a Washington photographer headed out to take pictures of homeless people in the city streets, she had no idea her work would wind up reuniting a Rochester, New York, family.

Jacquelyn Martin is an Associated Press photographer based in Washington, DC. Her regular beat is the White House. But with the president away for the weekend, her editor suggested she turn her lens to the homeless people struggling to keep warm on the capital's frigid streets.

Early Saturday morning, one person in particular caught her eye: a young twenty-something man huddling in a blanket.

She and the rest of the country would soon discover the much larger story behind her photograph.
