A CBC story about a new study of the psychology behind marriage proposals last week prompted an outpouring of your personal stories of popping the question.

Why do some people orchestrate elaborate proposal schemes, while others opt for a more casual approach, and what does either one say about us?

We asked you to share your own stories of how you or your spouse proposed. Here are some of our favourites.

"When I proposed to my wife, I had been nervous all day, all through supper, and into the evening. I finally popped the question while we were watching a hockey game on TV (so Canadian!). She got teary-eyed, said yes, we hugged, and the Canadiens scored."

"My husband was going to take me for dinner but the whole area was without power except our home. While watching Nacho Libre (a very stupid movie), he couldn't wait one more day and proposed in the middle of the movie and both of us in our PJs."

"My husband proposed to me where we went on our first date. Been so happy together for 18 years!"

"My husband and I will have been married 58 years this June. We went out exactly three times and we had a real connection. But when he asked me, 'What are you doing the rest of your life?' I thought he was joking so I replied, 'Whatever you're doing, I guess.'"

"We were away in San Francisco for a little vacation. On the third floor there was a garden terrace and we were the only ones there in the morning and he got down on one knee. I was shaking and I loved that it was personal and just us."

"We were on a camping trip in B.C. Had a beautiful spot next to a quiet lake with a cozy fire going on a lovely evening. I held her hand, got down on my knee and asked her to marry me. No grand display, just a quiet intimate moment between the two of us."

"My husband proposed to me on my 30th birthday. He took me out for dinner, but as an introvert, he couldn't bring himself to do it in the restaurant. So in the car in the parking lot, staring at a brick wall, he pulled out the ring and said 'I want to marry you.'"

"My now husband is quite shy and introverted so I never expected him to propose to me in a fancy restaurant. Luckily it was after we had eaten. Everyone in the whole place applauded him. I was so embarrassed and happy obviously."

"My girlfriend said to me, 'Let's get married.' I said, 'Sure, but who'd have us?'"

"My husband proposed to me in our little kitchen, on bended knee, using a twist tie fashioned into a ring. The twist tie did morph into a lovely 'real' ring, but it still has pride of place in my jewelry box."

"My husband was a very practical man, and I wasn't thrilled about jewelry at the time, so he proposed to me and gave me a brand new Singer sewing machine as an engagement gift. We were married for 32 years when he passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. This past year I sewed a quilt made out of his clothes with that sewing machine It was very healing for me. I'd marry him all over again."
